PSU's Jose Quinones Named EIVA Player of the Year
State College, Pa.- For the second consecutive season, Penn State junior setter Jose Quinones (Bayamon, P.R.) was named the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association's Uvaldo Acosta Memorial Player of the Year. Quinones, who has now been named First Team All-EIVA in each of his three seasons at Penn State, has already set the school record for career assists with 4,990. He averaged 12.91 assists per game this season and was second on the team with 170 digs. Joining Quinones on the first team were teammates Carlos Guerra (Tamaulipus, Mex.), Zelimir Koljesar (Kitchener, Ont.) and John Mills (Fresno, Calif.) Guerra, a 6-5 sophomore outside hitter, led the Lions with 4.56 kills per game this season, while also hitting .322 on the year. Koljesar, a 6-4 sophomore opposite hitter, averaged 3.55 kills, 1.29 digs and 0.53 blocks per game this season. Mills, a 6-9 junior middle back, hit .484 and led the Lions with 1.14 blocks per game. Rounding out the first team were Concordia's Juan Jose Parra and Alvaro Velasco, Chris Barnes and Andre Melo of George Mason and Jeremy Hoff of Rutgers-Newark. Penn State's Zach Slenker (Dallastown, Pa.) was named to the All-EIVA second team. Koljesar, a computer science major, was also named to the All-EIVA Academic Team. All nine players named to the league's first team will be in action at this weekend's EIVA Tournament which will determine the league's representative to the NCAA Final Four.
