University Park, Pa., Feb. 26, 2005 - The fourth-ranked Penn State men's volleyball team downed Springfield in three games (30-23, 30-20, 30-27) Saturday afternoon in the south gym of Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions increase their winning streak to 14 matches and improve to 14-2 and 5-0 in the EIVA Tait while the Pride fall to 4-9 and 1-5 in conference action.
Sophomore outside hitter Alex Gutor (State College, Pa.) led the Lions with 10 kills as junior Nate Meerstein (Pittsburgh, Pa.) posted eight kills on nine attempts to hit .778. Junior Matt Proper (Guys Mills, Pa.) connected on seven of 11 attempts to hit .545 while sophomore Kyle Masterson (South Barrington, Ill.) posted six kills while hitting .714. As a team, Penn State hit .321 while holding Springfield to hit .195.
Junior setter Dan O'Dell (Rochester, N.Y.) directed the Penn State offense for a game and a half and dished out 18 assists before freshman setter Luke Murray (East Petersburg, Pa.) took over and provided 16 assists.
Penn State and Springfield both recorded 9.5 team blocks in the contest. Senior Keith Kowal (Reading, Pa.) led the Lions with four blocks.
The Nittany Lions take to the road, traveling to the UCSD Invitational in San Diego, Calif., on Friday and Saturday, March 4-5. Penn State takes on the host Tritons on Friday at 8:00 p.m. PT before facing UC-Irvine on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. PT. The Nittany Lions remain on the west coast to face No. 1 UCLA on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m. PT.
