No. 11 Penn State Men¡¯s Volleyball Tops No. 8 Ohio State, 3-1
Springfield, Mass., Feb. 10, 2006 - The 11th-ranked Penn State men¡¯s volleyball team avenged a loss from earlier in the season, downing No. 8 Ohio State in four games (30-19, 25-30, 30-25, 30-27). The upset is the Lions second in as many matches, as they defeated No. 3 Long Beach State last weekend. Penn State improves to 5-4 while Ohio State falls to 9-2. Freshman outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) pounded a career-high 17 kills on .481 hitting to lead all players. Senior opposite Matt Proper (Guys Mills, Pa.) added 11 kills and senior middle hitter Nate Meerstein (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman middle hitter Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) each recorded 10 kills. As a team, the Nittany Lions attacked at a .316 clip while holding the Buckeyes to hitting .194. Senior setter Dan O¡¯Dell (Rochester, N.Y.) directed the Penn State offense with 50 assists and junior libero Aaron Smith (Forest, Va.) led the squad with eight digs as Anderson chipped in seven. Penn State outblocked Ohio State, 14.5 to 11.0, led by Holt and O Dell with six each, a season high for O¡¯Dell. Meerstein posted four blocks as Anderson tallied three and senior outside hitter Kevin Wentzel (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tallied two to go along with his five kills. The Buckeyes were led by Brett Versen and Sam Stevens with 11 kills each. Daniel Mathews dished out 49 assists and Conor Martin posted a match-high 14 digs. Versen and John Albertson each posted five blocks in the contest. The Nittany Lions remain on the road at the Volleyball Hall of Fame Classic in Springfield, Mass., taking on Stanford on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 6:00 p.m. Penn State returns home on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7:00 p.m. when it hosts EIVA-foe Rutgers-Newark.
