No. 7 Men¡¯s Volleyball Welcomes EIVA Foes This Weekend

  • UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; February 8, 2007 ¨CThe seventh-ranked Penn State men¡¯s volleyball team (4-2, 1-0) continues play in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) action when it hosts Saint Francis (5-3, 2-0) and George Mason (3-1, 1-1) this weekend at Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions and Red Flash square off on Friday, Feb. 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Gym of Rec Hall before the Lions take on the Patriots on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 8:00 p.m. in the South Gym of Rec Hall.

    Livestats and video will be available at www.GoPSUsports.com for the Saint Francis match. Tickets for the matches are $5 for adults, $3 for youth and $2 each for groups of 10 or more. Penn State students are free with their university ID.

    Previewing Penn State
    The Nittany Lions enter the match with a 4-2 overall record after defeating local rival Juniata in three games (30-28, 30-21,30-23) Tuesday night. Senior outside hitter and EIVA Player of the Week Alex Gutor (Kiev, Ukraine) leads the team with 5.47 kills per game as sophomore opposite Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) adds in 4.21 kpg and sophomore middle hitter Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) provides 2.84 kpg. Junior setter Luke Murray (East Petersburg, Pa.) dishes out 13.37 assists per game as senior libero Ryan Walthall (Irvine, Calif.) tops the squad with 2.58 digs per game. Holt heads the blocking chart with 0.95 blocks per game as Anderson and freshman middle hitter Max Lipsitz (Williamsville, N.Y.) average 0.74 bpg and Murray provides 0.68 bpg. As a team, Penn State is hitting .328 with 16.16 kills per game, 1.58 service aces per game, 10.26 digs per game and 2.37 blocks per game.

    The Series: Penn State vs. Saint Francis
    Penn State leads Saint Francis, 17-0, in a series that began in 1995. The last meeting was a three-game Lion win (30-27, 30-21, 30-25) in the EIVA Championship match on April 29, 2006 at Rec Hall.

    The Series: Penn State vs. George Mason
    Penn State leads George Mason, 77-13, in a series that began in 1977. The last meeting was a four-game Patriot win (30-26, 18-30, 22-30, 21-30) on March 25, 2006 in Fairfax, Va., Penn State¡¯s first EIVA loss in two seasons. The last Nittany Lion victory was a three-game win (30-18, 30-24, 30-21) on Feb. 25, 2006 at Rec Hall.
