No. 1 Penn State Men's Volleyball Falls to No. 2 UCLA

HONOLULU, Jan. 19, 2001 -- The top-ranked Penn State men's volleyball team fell to second-ranked UCLA Friday night in three games (36-38, 20-30, 31-33) on the second night of action at the Outrigger Hotels Invitational in Honolulu. Penn State falls to 1-2 on the season while UCLA improves to 4-1.

Junior Carlos Guerra (Tamaulipus, Mexico) led Penn State with 15 kills while juniors Zach Slenker (Dallastown, Pa.) and Zeljko Koljesar (Kitchener, Ontario) chipped in 13 and 14, respectively. Senior Jos¨¦ Qui?ones directed the Nittany Lion offense, tallying 51 assists in the loss, while senior Jason Hawkins (Reading, Pa.) recorded a team-high six digs.

After UCLA won the marathon first game of the match, their momentum proved to be too much for the Lions, as they took game two by a score of 30-20. Penn State fought back in the third stanza, but the Lions could not overcome the Bruins' .500 hitting percentage. Overall, Penn State was outhit .353 to .500. The battle at the net was even, with both teams tallying eight blocks in the match. Penn State recorded 18 service errors to UCLA's 13, and the Bruins also took the digging battle, 28-24.

The Lions conclude their Hawaiian swing on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 10:00 p.m. ET when they face 11th-ranked Lewis.
