UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - No. 14 Penn State men's volleyball team swept Mount Olive Friday night in Rec Hall.

“I thought tonights match was one where we show our dominance in stretches," said head coach Mark Pavlik.

"I think then we kind of put the lunch pail down, and got away from just getting after it; then, we’d pick it back up,” said Pavlik.

"This was a team that gave us eight points in game one, gave us eight points in game two, and in game three, gave us six points, and forced us to go to 19." Pavlik continued.

Penn State used a series of runs and offensive attack to take down the Trojans as four different Nittany Lions had at least five kills in the win, with two reaching double digits. Chris Nugent led the way with 14 kills on..417 hitting, while and two digs. 

Lee Smith, tied his season and career high 12 kills hitting .450, and recorded a season high five digs. Kevin Gear added six kills while Calvin Mende added five kills.

Luke Brawsell dished out 41 assists in the win, while from the service line; the Nittany Lions owned a 5-0 advantage, helped out by two aces from Matthew McLaren.

“I like the way we played at the net,” said Pavlik.


Defensively, Penn State combined for the total 10 blocks with Jalen Penrose posting a team-high three blocks. 

Penn State opened up the first set with a 6-0 run, and never looked back. In the first set, the Nittany Lions went on five 3-0 runs, including the opening 6-0 run, and a 4-0 run to close the set at 25-16.

The second set was a different story, as Mount Olive was able to stop Penn State from going on an any runs larger than 3-0. The two teams battled back and forth in the opening points; however, the Nittany Lions were ultimately able to find their niche, and establish a consistent two-point lead for the majority of the set.  Penn State had a match 85% (17-19) sideout, and took the match 25-18.

Penn State went on to the win the third set 25-19, and take the match 3-0 for their second sweep of the season.

Penn State returns to action tomorrow night in Rec Hall as the Nittany Lions host the Coker Cobras at 7:00 p.m. ET.
