COLUMBUS, OHIO – No.1 Ohio State proved to be a tough draw Tuesday night as Penn State fell to the Buckeyes 3-0 (16-25, 22-25, 16-25) in non-conference action at St. John Arena.

Lee Smith led the Nittany Lions in kills putting away eight on the night followed by Chris Nugent who recorded six in the match.

Royce Clemens led the team in digs with his 11 while Luke Braswell led the Lions in assist with 22.

Penn State got off to a rough start, surrendering a service ace on the opening serve, but bounced back to make the set competitive going point-for-point with the Buckeyes and never trailing by more than a point along the way to a 14-14 tie off a Buckeye attack error.

Ohio State took the lead 15-14 on a Nittany Lion service error the following play and never looked back taking the set 25-16 ending it on an 11-2 run.

Set two saw the Lions up early leading 8-2 and forcing an early Buckeye timeout. Penn State continued to lead midway through the set when a Nittany Lion error gave Ohio State the first lead of the set at 16-15.

Penn State kept it close staying within two points of the defending national champs, resuming the lead on a kill from Lee Smith giving Penn State a one-point 22-21 lead forcing the second timeout of the set by OSU.

The timeout proved to be costly for Penn State as Ohio State scored four straight to take the set 25-22 and hold a 2-0 lead.

Penn State battled hard in the third set but fell by the same score as the first-set 25-16 ending the match 3-0 in favor of the Buckeyes.

Penn State falls to 3-4 on the season but will look to get back in the win column as they host Mount Olive Fri., Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. in Rec Hall followed by a 7 p.m. match on Sat. against the undefeated Coker Cobras.
