State College, Pa., November 17, 2002 - The day started out on a bright note for the Nittany Lions when freshman Malcolm Scatliffe (San Bernardino, Calif.) advanced to the second round of the consolation bracket winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 against David Anving of Minnesota.
In the second round of the consolations, Penn State saw three members advance to the third round. Freshman Nate Emge (Evansville, Ind.) battled hard and won a great battle winning 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 against Jimmy McGuire of Michigan State. Also winning for the Nittany Lions were freshman Mark Barry (St. Charles, Ill.) and junior Todd Stecko (Lake Forest, Ill). Battling hard but coming up short in the second round was Malcolm Scatliffe losing 6-2, 6-4 to Juliene Vulliez.
In third round action Mark Barry was the lone Nittany Lion to advance into the quarterfinals of the consolation round. Barry defeated Chris Shaya of Minnesota 6-3, 6-4 to advance. Nate Emge fought hard but didn¡¯t have enough to pull out the victory against Chuck Perrin of Northwestern 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. Also falling was Todd Stecko in straight sets to Juliene Vulliez of Indiana 6-4, 6-4.
In the seeded 7-8 singles Penn State looked to have an all Nittany Lions final. Chris Rubin spoiled this for the Lions by defeating sophomore Clint Keithley (Valparaiso, Ind.) in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. In the other semifinal match senior Brad Nudell (Girard, Ohio) won convincingly in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 over Ahmed Wahla of Northwestern. Nudell advanced to the finals where he wasted no time winning 6-0, 6-2 against Ruben to win the championship.
Penn State will look to stay alive tomorrow on the final day of the Big Ten Individual Championship.
