Three Nittany Lions Advance to Main Draw at Big Ten Singles Championships
Freshman St-Maurice defeated Iowa¡¯s Scott Elwell in three sets to advance (7-5, 3-6, 6-4). Gormley and Dwyer were both straight-set winners in the second round of the 32-player qualifying draw. Gormley defeated Michigan¡¯s Matt Parks, 6-1, 6-2. Dwyer ousted Michigan¡¯s Mike DePietro by a score of 6-4, 7-6(4).
The three Nittany Lions who advanced will join Michael James (Clifton, Va.), Bradley Hunter (Atlanta, Ga.), Ryan Berger (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Adam Slagter (Austin, Texas) and Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) in the main draw on Saturday.
The first and second rounds of the 64-player main draw are scheduled to begin on Saturday at 8 a.m. The third round and quarterfinals will be played on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. The tournament will conclude with the semifinals and championship match on Monday. There will be a consolation bracket for first-round losers.
