5 Members of the Penn State Men¡¯s Tennis Team Participate at the 2002 Omni Hotels Eastern Championships

Philadelphia, Pa., October 25, 2002 ¡ª Several members of the Penn State men¡¯s tennis team traveled to Philadelphia to take part of the Omni Hotels Eastern Championships. Those competing in singles action are senior Matt Frakes (Winchester, Virginia), junior Roddy Cantey (Aiken, South Carolina), freshman Nate Emge (Evansville, Indiana), freshman Mark Barry (St. Charles, Illinois) and freshman Malcolm Scatliffe (San Bernardino, California). Also, the tandems of Nate Emge and Mark Barry, and Roddy Cantey and Malcolm Scatliffe will take part in doubles action.

On the first day of the Omni Hotels Eastern Championships Nate Emge advanced to the second round with a bye while his doubles counterpart Mark Barry recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Cornell¡¯s Abedin Sham. Roody Cantey suffered a tough lost to Maartan Vissers of Rutgers 7-6 (4), 6-4. Also, on the losing side of a great match was Matt Frakes falling to John Sabia of Army 6-4. 5-7, 6-2.

Both Penn State doubles teams advanced to the second round. The tandem of freshman¡¯s Mark Barry and Nate Emge defeated Rao and Sherwood of Binghampton 8-2. The other Penn State team of Roddy Cantey and Malcolm Scatliffe advanced with a bye in the first round.

Penn State will continue in the second round of the Omni Hotels Eastern Championships tomorrow October 26, 2002.
