UNIVERSITY PARK, PA ¨C OCTOBER 16, 2005 ¨C The Nittany Lion men¡¯s tennis team left the Army Invitational Sunday after winning eight of 11 matches on the final day of action. The Lions compiled a 24-4 overall record at this weekend¡¯s invitational.

In the Nittany Lions¡¯ first match of the day versus Yale, Penn State won six of seven singles matches. Senior Malcolm Scatliffe (San Bernardino, Calif.) was defeated by Milosz Gudzowski at No. 1 singles, following a tough three-set battle and tiebreaker (6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8)).

In doubles action versus Yale, the Lions went 2-2 as Adam Slagter (Austin, Texas) and Chris Sherman (Edina, Minn.) teamed up for a win playing at the No. 3 spot, and freshmen team Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) and Alex Mast (Lancaster, Pa.) joined together for a victory at the No. 4 spot.

The Nittany Lions also battled Army in doubles action, closing out the day with a doubles sweep of 3-0 versus the Black Knights.

¡°Our success this weekend will get us ready for our next match which is the ITA Regional event,¡± said assistant men¡¯s tennis coach Bill Potoczny. ¡°Each school sends their top players to the tournament and we¡¯re one of the few schools who got six players in the main draw. Not too many schools get the opportunity to send that many guys.¡±

Six Nittany Lions will square off against some of the best players in the country at next weekend¡¯s ITA Northeast Regional Championships. The prestigious tournament will begin Friday October 21 and run through October 25 in Hanover, N.H.
