Nittany Lion Tennis Tallies Eight Wins on Day One of the UVa Fall Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team kicked off the UVa Fall Classic with an impressive total of eight doubles victories in day one of the UVa Fall Classic, Friday. Three doubles pairings took third place in their doubles flights and one pairing took the consolation bracket championship. Action will continue tomorrow with singles play from the Snyder Tennis Center.
In the "Blue" draw, senior Taylor Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Chris Young (Melbourne, Australia) dropped their first match of the afternoon, 8-5. The duo rebounded in the consolation bracket, pulling off an 8-3 victory to advance to the consolation finals. They then mowed through the competition in the finals, 8-4, earning the "Blue" flight consolation championship.
Junior C.J. Griffin (Portland, Mich.) and senior Christopher Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.) took their opening match in the "Orange" draw, 8-4. The tandem then dropped an 8-6 decision in their second round pairing before going on to take the third place draw, 8-6.
In the "White" doubles bracket freshman Tomas Hanzlik (Prague, Czech Republic) and senior Jason Lee (Sydney, Australia) earned an, 8-5 first round victory, before going on to lose their second round match up, 8-4. The duo impressively took the third place honors with an 8-0 triumph.
To round out the day's action, junior Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) and sophomore Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) followed a similar path in taking their first match, 8-5, before falling in an exciting second match to the top-seed, 9-7. The tandem rebounded nicely though to earn an 8-4 victory and take the third place crown.
Following the completion of the UVa Fall Classic, Penn State will return home before heading to Charlottesville, Va. to compete in the ITA Regional Championships, Oct. 20-23.
