Men's Tennis defeats Columbia on the last day of the ECAC Championships
Flushing Meadows, NY., October 6, 2002 ¡ª In the final round of the ECAC Championships the #6 seeded Penn State University defeated #7 seeded Columbia University 5-2.
With nothing to lose Penn State came out and won all three doubles matches to give them an early 1-0 lead. At #1 doubles the team of junior Roddy Cantey (Aiken, South Carolina) and freshman Malcolm Scatliffe (San Bernardino, Calif.) set the pace early for the Nittany Lions winning 8-6. Rounding out the doubles was the tandem of senior Matt Frakes ( Winchester, Virginia) and senior Brad Nudell (Girard, Ohio) winning a tough battle 8-7. Penn State looked to add to their lead during the singles matches. After falling at number one and two singles, Penn State bounced back by winning the remaining four matches. Freshman Mark Barry (St. Charles, Illinois) looked impressive at #4 singles defeating Rohan Saikia 6-3, 6-4, carrying the momentum in favor of the Nittany Lions. Junior Todd Stecko (Lake Forrest, Illinois) rounded out the singles matches with a big win against Eric Wallace winning 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2). Penn State leaves the ECAC Championships winning two of three matches. On the first day of competition Penn State defeated Colgate University before falling to Brown University on day two of the Championships. #6 Penn State defeated #7 Columbia - 5-2
