State College, Pa. ¨C September 24, 2005 ¨C The Penn State Nittany Lion men¡¯s tennis team had an undefeated debut to the 2005-06 season by not losing a set on day one of the Penn State Fall Classic.

The Nittany Lions swept six singles matches and three doubles matches vs. Niagara and seven singles matches vs. St. Bonaventure in the ¡®mock duals¡¯ formatted tournament. No team dual match victory is recorded.

Senior Mark Barry (St. Charles, Ill.) began preparation for the ITA All-America Championships with two wins in singles. The All-Big Ten Senior downed Walter Garcia of Niagara 6-1, 6-2, and defeated Alejandro Nery of St. Bonaventure 6-3, 6-0. Senior Malcolm Scatliffe (San Bernardino, Calif.), the other half of Penn State¡¯s potent one/two punch, missed the day¡¯s action with an illness.

Junior Ryan Berger (Grand Rapids, Mich.) did a fine job of moving up in the line-up, recording two wins at No. 2 singles. Berger beat Justin McConkey of Niagara 6-0, 6-1, and Leo Mochizuki of St. Bonaventure 6-0, 6-1. Also recording two wins at No. 3 singles was junior Bradley Hunter (Atlanta, Ga.). Sophomores James Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Michael James (Clifton, Va.) both won their singles matches as well.

Freshman Adam Slagter (Austin, Tex.) had a fine collegiate debut, collecting two wins at No. 4 singles. Penn State¡¯s other two freshmen, Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) and Alex Mast (Lancaster, Pa.) each got debut singles wins as well.

¡°This was a solid start for us,¡± assistant coach Bill Potoczny said. ¡°Our veterans played well and the freshmen did a great job in their first competition. They had high intensity and they did a great job of putting opponents away when they had the chance.¡±

The tournament will conclude tomorrow with action beginning at 9 a.m. at the Sarni Tennis Center.
