Men's Tennis Opens Fall Classic with Perfect Record

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., September 22, 2006 ¨C The Nittany Lion men¡¯s tennis team opened the Penn State Fall Classic with an unblemished record in both singles and doubles action against Army. In Todd Doebler¡¯s head coaching debut, the Nittany Lions swept the Black Knights, 8-0 in singles action and 4-0 in doubles. Doebler was pleased with the first day of action at the Fall Classic. ¡°I thought the guys did a good job of competing with a high level of intensity,¡± Doebler said. ¡°They did a good job of taking care of business in doubles and in singles.¡± In first singles action, senior Ryan Berger (Grand Rapids, Mich.) defeated Michael Good in straight sets (6-2, 6-2). Adam Slagter (Austin, Texas) cruised past Sean Harris in No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-0). Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) ousted Charles Mullenger 6-3, 6-0 in No. 3 singles. In a hard fought fourth singles match, Bradley Hunter (Atlanta, Ga.) defeated Chris Albornoz, 6-3, 7-6 (2). In a fine freshman debut at No. 5 singles Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) defeated Bruno Lucivero, 6-1, 6-0. Michael James (Clifton, Va.) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Johnny Lucero at the sixth singles spot. In the No. 7 singles match, freshman Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.) started his college career with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Tyler Magerkurth, while the eighth singles match saw Alex Mast (Lancaster, Pa.) post a win over Army¡¯s Alaine Chuntraruk, 6-4, 6-2. In doubles action Berger and Slagter paired up to defeat Good and Harris of Army, 8-4, while Hunter and James defeated Mullenger and Albornoz at the No. 2 spot. St-Maurice and Lynch posted a doubles victory along with the duo of Dwyer and Gormley. The Fall Classic will continue tomorrow and Sunday at 9 a.m. at Sarni Tennis Center. The Nittany Lions will face St. Bonaventure in singles and Niagara in doubles on Saturday and will conclude the Fall Classic with singles and doubles matches against Manhattan Sunday.
