Men¡¯s Tennis Defeats Minnesota 4-3 in Big Ten Championship Quarterfinals
Updated Championship Results/Bracket UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ¨C April 28, 2006 ¨C The sixth-seeded Penn State men¡¯s tennis team upset No. 3-seed Minnesota Friday afternoon, 4-3 in a quarterfinal Big Ten Championship match up at the University of Minnesota¡¯s Baseline Tennis Center. Penn State will meet No. 2 seed and four-time defending Big Ten champion Illinois in the championship semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT (3 p.m. ET). The Nittany Lions will be making their first Big Ten semifinal appearance since 1993. The Nittany Lions went into doubles competition down 1-0 after Mark Barry (St. Charles, Ill.) and Adam Slagter (Austin, Texas) were defeated at the No. 1 position (8-6) and Ryan Berger (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Brad Hunter (Atlanta, Ga.) were defeated at the No. 2 spot (9-7). Competing at the No. 3 position was the duo of Malcolm Scatliffe (San Bernardino, Calif.) and Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) but their match would be abandoned, as the Gophers would take the doubles point. Penn State evened the team score at the start of singles play as Michael James (Clifton, Va.) took out Adrien Debreyne at the No. 4 spot (6-3, 6-3), but Minnesota responded with a victory at No. 5, with Raoul Schwark's 6-4, 6-3 win over Slagter. Osorio stretched Minnesota's lead to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Scatliffe, but 68th-ranked Barry, upset 58th-ranked D.J. Geatz 7-6 (5), 6-2 at the No. 1 spot to pull Penn State within one. Playing at the No. 3 spot, Berger came back from a set down to take out Nic Edlefsen in thrilling fashion. With the 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory, Berger leveled the team score to put his squad in position for the upset. As the score was tied at 3-3 with the match coming down to Lynch at the No. 6 spot, the freshman came through in the clutch winning in three sets over Sion Wilkins (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) to give the Nittany Lions a narrow 4-3 win over Minnesota.
