CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Penn State men's tennis senior Bryan Welnetz(Laredo, Texas) put up a tough fight in his Round of 16 match at the ITA Atlantic Regional, but came up short against one of the top players in the nation. Russell Bader(Austin, Texas) and Roman Trkulja(Toronto, Canada) advanced to the doubles Quarterfinal before falling in that round. Tomas Hanzlik(Prague, Czech Republic) and Welnetz dropped their doubles Round of 16 match. The Nittany Lions ended regional play with eight singles wins and five doubles wins over the weekend. Penn State is off next weekend before heading to the Big Ten Singles Championships and the Collegiate Clay Court Invitational Nov. 2-4.
After picking up two wins on Saturday to advance to Sunday's quarterfinal, Bryan Welnetz gave Virginia's Jarmere Jenkins a good battle. However, Welnetz fell 7-5, 7-6(2) against the second ranked singles player in the preseason 2012 ITA Singles Poll. On Saturday, Welnetz defeated Virginia Tech's Marko Lovrinovic(6-1, 6-3) in the Round of 64 and Old Dominion's Carlos Lopez-Villa(6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2)) in the Round of 32.
Russell Bader and Roman Trkulja advanced to Sunday's Quarterfinal with their Round of 16 win, earlier in the day, over Virginia Tech's Hunter Koontz and Trpimir Kujundzic 8-3. In the Quartefinal, the duo took on George Washington's Nikita Fomin and Danil Zelenkov, but fell 8-4. Bader and Trkulja defeated Liberty's Shea Thomas and Egon Samaii 8-4 on Saturday to advance to the Round of 16.
Tomas Hanzlik and Bryan Welnetz dropped their Round of 16 match 8-2 against VCU's Alexis Huegas and Michal Voscek. The duo picked up two wins on the weekend with an 8-1 Round of 64 result against St. Joseph's Max Montague and Andreas Urrea and an 8-2 victory over UMBC's Juan Manuel Aranzazu and Alexander Drean.
Senior Guanhua Chen(DaLian, China) and junior Chris Young(Melbourne, Australia) also earned a doubles win over the weekend with their 8-6 victory against Georgetown's Charlie Caris and Casey Distaso. Four of the Nittany Lions' five doubles teams picked up at least one win over the weekend.
During the regional, Russell Bader and Tomas Hanzlik joined Bryan Welnetz by reaching the Round of 32 in singles. Only Virginia(6), Virginia Tech(5), and VCU(4) had more representatives in the Round of 32. Bader reached the Round of 32 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Morgan State's Duk Young Park. He fell 7-6, 7-5 to Virginia's Justin Shane in the Round of 32. Hanzlik defeated St. Joseph's Alex Veronis6-4, 6-0 in the Round of 64, before dropping a 7-6(2), 6-4 result to Liberty's Siim Tuus in the Round of 32.
Chris Young, C.J. Griffin(Portland, Mich.), and Roman Trkulja all picked up main draw singles wins over the weekend. Young defeated George Washington's Viktor Svensson 7-5, 6-3. Griffin knocked off William & Mary's Ben Hoogland 7-5, 7-5. Trkulja won 6-3, 6-2 against St. Joseph's Andres Urrea.
Ramy Labna(Doha, Qatar) earned a win in the Qualifying Round on Thursday, with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Morgan State's Jannick Tash.
