Penn State Falls in Upset Attempt

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men’s tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision against #40 N.C. State. Senior Bryan Welnetz(Laredo, Texas) and sophomore Tomas Hanzlik(Prague, Czech Republic) picked up their first doubles win of the spring. Both Hanzlik and Welnetz also picked up a singles win as well as freshman Roman Trkulja(Toronto, Canada). Penn State resumes action on Sunday with a doubleheader against Cornell and Cleveland State. The Nittany Lions will face Cornell at noon and Cleveland State at 5:00p.m.
Bryan Welnetz earned a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Austin Powell for his first win of the spring. It was a big win out of the number one spot for the Nittany Lions to get them a point on the board.
Freshman Roman Trkulja picked up his first career spring win with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Robbie Mudge. Trkulja battled back from down 4-5 to win the last set.
Tomas Hanzlik defeated Dave Thomson 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to give the Nittany Lions their third singles win of the day.
Matt Barry(Lido Beach, N.Y.) took a tough loss in the final match of the evening. The freshman won the first set 6-3 against Sean Weber. He held a 4-1 lead in the second set, but was unable to hold on, losing 6-7(2). In the third set, Barry battled hard but dropped a 4-6 result.
Senior C.J. Griffin(Portland, Mich.) dropped his match in three sets, falling to N.C. State’s Simon Norenius 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Russell Bader fell 7-6(3), 6-4 in his match against Thomas Weigel.
Competing in the second doubles spot, Welnetz and Hanzlik defeated N.C. State’s Austin Powell and Beck Bond 7-6(2) to start their spring season off with a win.
N.C. State’s Sean Weber and Dave Thomson knocked off Russell Bader(Austin, Texas) and Roman Trkulja 8-5. Bader and Trkulja were competing in the first doubles slot for the Nittany Lions.
