Davey Sandgren will begin his second full season serving as a volunteer assistant for the Penn State men's tennis team. Sandgren, a 2010 graduate of Tennessee, joins the Nittany Lions after an illustrious collegiate career. He posted a career singles record of 84-71 and climbed as high as No. 69 in the ITA singles rankings while with the Volunteers. The Gallatin, Tenn. native posted his most impressive numbers on the doubles court though. Sandgren went 118-54 in career doubles play and partnered with John Patrick-Smith, reaching the No. 1 ITA rank March 16, 2010. The duo also won the 2009 SEC Coaches Indoor Championships and the Flight "A" bracket of the 2009 UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational tournament. Sandgren earned a number of honors during his playing career, including being named to the 2010 ITA All-America team and being named the 2010 ITA Ohio Valley Region Senior Player of the Year during his senior season. He teamed up with Patrick-Smith again to reach the finals in 2010 NCAA Tournament doubles competition. The Tennessean was also named to the All-SEC First Team in 2010 and earned second team honors in 2007. Sandgren also was a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll all four years at Tennessee. |
