Penn State Career

2006-07 Season - Junior:

Opened a stellar fall campaign with three victories in the Penn State Fall Classic...At the ECAC Championships, James played at No. 6 in the Lions' run to the tournament final...Knocked off Lucho Perez-Abreu of Saint Joseph's (6-1, 6-0) and Manhattan's David Alvarado (6-1, 6-2) in Penn State's second-place finish in the ECAC Championships...Advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Northeast Regional Championships singles draw before losing to Virginia Tech's Arvid Puranen...At the Big Ten Individual Championships, James advanced to the Round of 16 where he fell to 25th- ranked Matko Maravic of Michigan...Concluded the fall season with a team-best 11-2 record in singles play...In doubles, James and Adam Slagter teamed up to go 5-0 before dropping an 8-5 decision in the doubles final at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships...Opened the spring with four consecutive wins in singles action, three of which coming at the No. 1 spot...James then dropped back-to-back matches in Penn State's victories against St. John's (6-1) and at No. 38 Northwestern (4-3)...Following the losses, James racked up 10 straight wins, nine of which coming at the No. 1 spot in the lineup...James got back on the winning trail at No. 50 Wisconsin with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over the Badgers' Lachezar Kasarov...James went on to defeat ranked opponents in back-to-back matches to lead the Nittany Lions to a 9-2 record...Knocked off No. 39 Arvid Puranen (6-4, 6-4) of Virginia Tech and No. 39 Brian Hung (6-1, 5-7, 6-3) of Michigan...James' win over Hung moved his season mark to 8-2 in duals, and garnered the honor of being named Big Ten Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week on March 15 for being pivotal in the Lions' 4-3 victory at Michigan...Went on to win 10 consecutive matches, nine of which being at the No. 1 spot, prior to dropping a three-set decision to fifth-ranked Kevin Anderson of Illinois (6-3, 4-6, 4-6)...As part of the winning streak, James was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week for the second time in the spring for his back-to-back straight-set victories at Iowa and No. 29 Minnesota...Defeated 27th-ranked Devin Mullings from Ohio State (6-3, 6-2) in the Lions' 5-2 loss to the Buckeyes...Capped off his junior season with a straight-set victory over Pepperdine's Andre Begemann (7-5, 6-3) in Penn State's fourth visit to the first round of the NCAA Championships...Went 27-8 overall, 16-6 in duals and 6-4 in the Big Ten in singles play...Finished the spring with a season-high ranking of 59th in the ITA National Singles Poll...Ranked as high as 19th in the nation in doubles while teamed with Adam Slagter...Highlights included an 8-6 victory over Cornell's 41st-ranked team of Nick Brunner and Josh Raff and a 9-8 decision over Northwestern's 27th-ranked team of Matt Christian and Willy Lock...Finished the spring with a 15-8 record in doubles...Named to the All-Big Ten Team for the first time in his career...Named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team for the second time in his career...Named ITA Northeast Region Player to Watch...Named Most Improved Player at the team banquet in April.

2005-06 Season - Sophomore:

Began his sophomore campaign by posting a superb 16-3 overall singles record in fall competition...Also combined with Malcolm Scatliffe to go 10-2 in doubles play...James and Scatliffe reached the semifinal round of the ITA East Regional Tournament, losing only to the tournament's No. 2-seeded team...Also competing in singles competition at the East Regional, James fell in first-round main-draw action, but went on to win the consolation bracket...At the Big Ten Indoor Individual Championships, posted five wins in consolation action to reach the final match...Posted an 11-8 overall singles record in spring competition...Won four of his first five matches in spring play...Combined with Scatliffe to go 13-5 on the season, going 6-3 in dual matches and ending the season with a No. 13 Northeast regional ranking...Went 27-11 overall in singles play including a 13-8 dual-match mark...Received Academic All-Big Ten honors.

2004-05 Season - Freshman:

Went 27-6 overall as a freshman, posting the team's best overall winning percentage...Went 19-3 at No. 5 singles, 4-0 at No. 4, and 1-0 at No. 3...Was superb down the stretch for Penn State, going 8-2 in his last 10 matches...Went 17-9 overall in doubles action, including a 6-1 mark with Ryan Berger and an 11-8 mark with Chris Sherman at No. 3 doubles.

Junior Career:

Was a four-year starter at Centreville and was the team's MVP for four straight years...As a freshman went 9-6, improving to 17-2 as a sophomore...Began an outstanding two-year run as a junior where he went 44-0...Went 25-0 as a junior and claimed the Virginia AAA High School Championship in both singles and doubles...Went 19-0 and claimed the AAA singles title again his senior season.
