2/2/14 Men's Tennis vs. Virginia Tech
Fall 2014: Went 1-4 in singles and 4-5 in doubles, while competing at the ITA All-American Championships, ITA Atlantic Regional and William & Mary Invitational... Ranked 29th in singles in the preseason ITA Poll. Stakhovsky and Alex Fennell were ranked 43rd in the preseason doubles poll... Combined with Fennell at the ITA All-American Championships, but dropped a 7-6(4), 7-5 match against San Diego State's Frederich Gelbrich and Hendrick Jebens... Paired with Michael Reilly to go 3-1 at the ITA Atlantic Regional and reach the doubles semifinals. The duo knocked off Duquesne's Tim Kane and Harry Walshe, 8-6, George Washington's Danil Zelenkov and Cahit Kapukrian, 8-4, and Virginia Tech's Aaron Gomez and Florian Nicoud, 8-3. The pair fell 3-6, 7-6(5), 10-8 in a tight semifinal match against Virginia's Luca Corinteli and Ryan Shane... Reilly and Stakhovsky went 1-3 at William & Mary, defeating Harvard's Alex Steinroeder and Kenny Tao... Dropped a 7-5, 7-6(8) result against Oklahoma's #40 Andrew Harris in the first round of the qualifying draw at the ITA All-American Championships... Fell 6-3, 6-2 to William & Mary's Christian Cargill at the ITA Atlantic Regional... Went 1-2 at the William & Mary Invitational, dropping matches against Cargill, 6-3, 6-4, and Harvard's Sebastian Beltrame, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. However, Stakhovsky bounced back to knock off Old Dominion's #42 Carlos Lopez Villa, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
2013-14 (Sophomore): Unanimous First Team All-Big Ten. Qualified for NCAA Singles Championships and NCAA Doubles Championships. Big Ten Player of the Week on February 4, March 26 and April 1. First Nittany Lion to win Big Ten POW three times in a single season... Went 18-7 this spring at the top singles spot, including eight wins against ranked opponents and a 6-4 mark in Big Ten play. Stakhovsky was ranked in the ITA Poll 13 straight weeks to finish the year. He reached as high as #33... Stakhovsky combined with Russell Bader to go 18-6 in doubles with five wins against ranked opponents and an 8-2 record against the Big Ten. They were ranked for nine straight weeks to finish the year. They reached as high as 26th in the ITA Poll... Bader and Stakhovsky won seven straight matches including an 8-6 victory against No. 1 Ohio State's 3rd-ranked Kobelt/ Metka... The duo won eight matches against Big Ten opponents, including ranked wins against the Buckeyes, Michigan's Buzzi/Franks(22) and Indiana's Bednarczyk/Monette(65)... In the NCAA Second Round match, they knocked off Virginia's Corinteli/Styslinger, ranked 53rd, 8-5... They clinched the doubles point four times for Penn State... In the First Round of the NCAA Doubles Championships, Bader and Stakhovsky defeated Memphis' #13 O'Hare/Salisbury, 6-3, 6-4. In the second round, they fell 6-1, 7-6(3) against Ohio State's #4 Kobelt/ Metka... Stakhovsky won eight matches against ranked opponents, including Virginia Tech's Amerigo Contini, ranked 26th, and VCU's Alexis Heugas, ranked 73rd, Michigan's Alex Petrone, ranked 112th, Illinois' Jared Hiltzik, ranked 9th, and Northwestern's Raleigh Smith, ranked 37th... In the NCAA Tournament First Round, Stakhovsky rallied from down 5-4 in the third set to knock off No. 50 UNC Wilmington's Rafael Aita, ranked 50th, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, to clinch the match and send the Nittany Lions to the second round... In his NCAA Singles Championship First Round match, Stakhovsky dropped a 6-2, 6-2 result to Vanderbilt's Gonzales Austin, ranked 21st in the nation... Did not see any action in the fall.
Before Penn State: Stakhovsky comes to Penn State after transferring from Oklahoma, where he went 10-10 in singles and 6-5 in doubles last year. The Kiev, Ukraine native boasts a career-high ATP 840 in singles and 814 in doubles. He reached as high as 67 in the ITF Junior Rankings, with multiple wins over Top 20 Juniors. Stakhovsky trained at Gymnazium Jiriho Wolkera. Leonard's brother, Sergiy, has a career-high ATP ranking of 31 in singles and 33 in doubles, including a win over Roger Federer at the 2013 Wimbledon Championships.
