2/2/14 Men's Tennis vs. Virginia Tech
Fall 2014: Went 4-4 in singles and 3-3 in doubles, while competing at the ITA All-American Championships, ITA Atlantic Regional and USTA Clay Court Invitational... Fennell and Stakhovsky were ranked 43rd in the ITA Preseason Doubles Poll. However the duo dropped a 7-6(4) result against San Diego State's Frederich Gelbrich and Hendrick Jebens at the ITA All-American Championships... Combined with Matt Barry to go 2-1 and reach the doubles Round of 16 at the ITA Atlantic Regional, defeating pairs from Old Dominion and Longwood before dropping an 8-3 result against Virginia's Luca Corinteli and Ryan Shane... Split a pair of matches at the USTA Clay Court Invitational, while teaming with Barry. The duo knocked off Virginia Tech's Aaron Gomez and Rafael Ribas, 8-1, but fell 8-7 against Florida State's Jose Gracia and Carlos Gonzalez-Mendez... Went 1-1 at the ITA All-American Championships, defeating Notre Dame's Kenny Sabacinski, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4... Also reached the singles Round of 16 at the regional, defeating UMBC's Alex Drean, 6-0, 6-1, and George Washington's Julius Tverijonas, 6-3, 7-6(5), before falling 6-1, 6-1 against Virginia Tech's #14 Amerigo Contini... Went 1-2 at the USTA Clay Court Invitational. Fennell's match against USC's #124 Erik Johnson was shown on ESPN3, with a tough three-set match going to Johnson, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5. Fennell bounced back the next day to defeat UCF's Reece Acree, 7-6(5), 6-0. Fennell fell, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(12) against Florida's Richard Brej.
2013-14 (Freshman): Fennell went 16-10 in singles this spring to finish the year with 20 overall wins. He also went 1-1 in doubles... Went 5-3 in singles and 5-3 in doubles this fall, while competing at the ITA All-American Championships, Wake Forest Invite and ITA Atlantic Regional... Fennell and Russell Bader reached the doubles semifinal at the ITA Atlantic Regional, including a win against Virginia's Ryan Shane and Jordan Daigle... He combined with Matt Barry for a 6-5(4) doubles win against William & Mary... Fennell went 1-2 in his first three matches of the spring, including a win against St. John's... However, he then rattled off 10 straight wins, all at the No. 3 singles spot. The wins came against Cleveland State, UMBC, Bucknell, Binghamton, Lehigh, No. 33 VCU, Penn, No. 1 Ohio State, No. 50 Princeton and No. 47 South Florida... He won five matches in Big Ten play, coming against the Buckeyes, No. 28 Northwestern, No. 70 Wisconsin, No. 63 Nebraska and Iowa... He defeated No. 50 UNC Wilmington's Sam Williams, 6-4, 6-1, in the NCAA Tournament First Round... Fennell clinched the match point five times for Penn State.
Junior Career: Fennell, a Bala Cynwyd, Pa., native, was rated as a five-star recruit and the 22nd-best recruit in the country by Tennisrecruiting.net. He combined with Christian Lutschaunig to give Penn State two of the top three prospects in Pennsylvania, according to Tennisrecruiting.net. The two combined to win a gold ball at the USTA Men's Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The Lower Merion High School alum also reached the quarterfinals at the USTA Spring National Championships.
