UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Following a two-week layoff, the Penn State swimming & diving teams return to action this weekend against some of the nation's top teams at the Ohio State Invitational. Both the men's and women's squads look to bounce back from losses to nationally-ranked Virginia on Nov. 20-21. In total, 22 events are scheduled over a three-day period beginning on Friday.
An impressive list of teams scheduled to compete are: Minnesota, Notre Dame (men), Ohio State, Pittsburgh and West Virginia. A number of squads that are only sending diving include: Alabama, Arizona State, Duke, Iowa, Miami (Fla.), Miami (Ohio), North Carolina State, Purdue and South Carolina.
The women look to bounce back from a 183-156 defeat at the hands of the No. 11 Cavaliers. Highlighting the meet once again was freshman Amy Modglin (Fort Myers, Fla.), who had two NCAA `B' Qualifying times. On Day One, she swam to a career-best time in the 200 backstroke (1:56.88), which was also good for second in program history. She followed that with a McCoy Natatorium record in the 400 IM (4:18.23), which was also good for eighth in program history.
Penn State divers also shined as Ilana Zeises (Huntingdown Valley, Pa.) won the three-meter followed by fellow junior Megan Marco's (Lebanon, Pa.) win in the one-meter.
The Lions have enjoyed recent success at the Ohio State Invitational, including second-place finishes last season and in 2005.
On the men's side, the Nittany Lions are coming off a 210.5-153.5 loss to Virginia on Nov. 21. The Lions were led by Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.) with a win in the 50-yard freestyle, while Dan Fimbianti (Mahwah, N.J.) captured the 200b backstroke.
