Women¡¯s Swimming and Diving Capture 2nd Place; Men Take 3rd.
Columbus, Ohio- Sunday, December 04, 2005- The Nittany Lion men¡¯s and women¡¯s swimming and diving team wrapped up competition in the three day Ohio State University invitational today. The women finished the day of competition squarely in 2nd place with a total score of 695.5. The women beat out Ohio State, Michigan State, University of Illinois, Bowling Green and the University of Iowa, only trailing the University of Minnesota, who swept the invite. The men took 3rd place with a score of 480. The men beat out Michigan State, Kenyon College, and the University of Iowa, but trailed Ohio State and Minnesota. Strong performances today included first place finishes in the 200 breaststroke prelims and finals by freshman Abby Hoisington (Leawood, Kan.). Hoisington won in the finals with a time of 2:19.62. Senior Amberle Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Co.) kept her strong performances all weekend going in the third day of competition, winning the 200 butterfly final with a NCAA ¡°B¡± Cut time of 2¡±00.13. Freshman Karie Haglund (Marietta, Ga.) took 2nd in the event with a time of 2:02.29. Biedermann also scored a ¡°B¡± cut time in the 200 butterfly prelims, taking 2nd place with a time of 2:01.62. Biedermann would continue to lead the women¡¯s team when she, freshman Kelly Nelson (West Chester, Pa.), junior Lauren Preyss (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), and senior Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.) took 2nd place in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:26.26. For the men, freshman David Kraft (Vienna, Va.) took 4th place in the 1650 freestyle prelims with a time of 15:50.33. In the final events this afternoon junior Dan Kaiserian (Radnor, Pa.), sophomore Sean Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Co.), freshman Jason Goldner (Allentown, Pa.), and sophomore Sean Swanepoel (KZN, South Africa) took 6th place in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:03.65. In the 200 butterfly freshman Tim Williams (North Bend, Ohio) took 5th place with a time of 1:51.94. The men and women will travel to Florida for a training trip from December 26th to January 7th. They compete next in the Georgia Diving Invitational on January 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The Nittany Lions return to McCoy Natatorium on January 14th to host St. Bonaventure at 3:00 p.m.
