Six Penn State Swimmers Achieve NCAA Times After Day 1 Finals and Day 2 Prelims at Auburn Tiger Invitational
AUBURN, ALA. (Dec. 3, 2004) - Six Penn State swimmers have picked up NCAA "B" cut times after the first day and a half at the Auburn Tiger Invitational, which is a non-scoring event being held Dec. 2-4 in Auburn, Ala. Junior Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.) has highlighted the Nittany Lions' efforts so far with a pair of wins, and one provisional time. She won the 100 backstroke with a "B" cut time of 55.90. She also helped teammates Courtney Stanchock (Bloomsburg, Pa.), Amberle Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Deirdre Dlugonski (Washington, Pa.) win the 400 medley relay in 3:45.09. Senior Kristen Woodring (Sinking Spring, Pa.) also won the 100 breaststroke preliminary with a "B" cut time of 1:02.93, which is less than one second off an "A" cut pace. Stanchock finished second in the 100 breaststroke preliminary behind Woodring with a "B" cut time of 1:03.86. The invitational will continue with Day 2 finals at 6 p.m. today, while it will wrap up with Day 3 preliminaries at 9 a.m. Saturday and then Day 3 finals at 4 p.m. Saturday. On the first day of swimming, sophomores Margy Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Nikki Collins (Carmel, Ind.) finished third and fourth in the 500 freestyle with NCAA "B" cut times of 4:49.71 and 4:53.33, respectively. Sophomore Megan Palera (Santa Maria, Calif.) also achieved an NCAA "B" cut time on Day 2 with a time of 4:21.94 in the 400 IM preliminary, in which she took second place. For the Penn State men, senior Daryl Northrop (Verona, N.J.) finished second in the 50 freestyle preliminary with a time of 20.71, freshman Kyle Miranda (Louisville, Colo.) was third in the 100 breaststroke preliminary in 56.77 and junior Shawn McLin (Sinking Spring, Pa.) took second in the 100 backstroke preliminary in 50.37.
