Nittany Lions Still in the Hunt at Virginia in a Four Team Clash

Charlottesville, Va. - November 11, 2005 - Adam Pierce (Conroe, Tx.) won the three meter diving event for the third consecutive time today during the first day of a quadrangular meet with defending national champs Auburn, defending ACC champs Virginia and Purdue.

Pierce won the event with a score of 353.80, helping the Penn State men to a 97 to 89 lead over Virginia going into the second day of events. The men trail Purdue 90 to 96 and Auburn 62 to 118. The women are beating Virginia 95 to 91, but trail Auburn 128.5 to 55.5.

The Nittany Lion women were bolstered by a win late in the meet when Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.), Abby Hoisington (Leawood, Ka.), Amberle Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Co.) and Molly Crispell (Boalsburg, Pa.) won the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:44.68.

Other strong performances by the women include third place in the 500 yard freestyle event by junior Nikki Collins (Carmel, In.) and a third place finish by Haupt in the 200 yard backstroke.

For the men junior Mike Alderman (Arlington, Va.) placed in the three meter diving event, taking third with a score of 298.85. Sophomore Sean Swanepoel (KZN, South Africa) also took third place in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 45.86.

The meet will conclude tomorrow in Charlottesville at 11 a.m. The Nittany Lion men and women will be back in action on November 22nd at McCoy Natatorium, where they will take on West Chester at 3 p.m.
