COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Shaun Anderson, a four-year men’s swimming & diving as well as track & field letterman, was appointed to the USA Swimming staff in October. Anderson, who resides in Norfolk, Va., will now serve as a Sport Diversity Consultant.
Anderson, along with colleague Ben Sheppard of Oakland Calif., will work with swimming clubs to expand their diversity efforts as well as seeking new diverse swimming clubs to join the USA ranks. Additionally, the duo will work primarily at the club level with athletes and coaches as well as be responsible for the organization of the annual USA Swimming Diversity Select Camp.
“We are very excited to add Shaun and Ben to our team at USA Swimming,” said Managing Director of Club Development Pat Hogan told USASwimming.com. “Not only do these guys have great hands-on experience in developing swimming programs in underserved communities, but their passion for expanding our sport into diverse communities is both compelling and contagious. I am very excited about our future diversity efforts.”
Anderson was a member of the 1999 Big Ten Championship team for the Nittany Lions when he was a sophomore. He was presented with the R. Lucas Shelly Award in 1999 for the most work put in the pool during the offseason.
Currently, Anderson works with Tidewater Aquatics Club in Virginia as an assistant coach and a faculty member of Norfolk State University in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science. He will stay on at NSU while working with USA Swimming.
Anderson’s work has included jump-starting the non-profit group Diversity in Aquatics, focused on assisting the promotion and expansion of diversity within the aquatic community. Anderson graduated with a degree in kinesiology and an MBA in finance from Cal. State-Long Beach.
