Penn State Men's And Women's Swimming And Diving Falls To Florida

State College, Pa . October 26, 2002 - In a much anticipated season-opener that featured ranked squads on both the men's and women's sides for Penn State and visiting Florida, the Gators prevailed by knocking off the men's and women's teams from Penn State Saturday afternoon at McCoy Natatorium. The losses drop both the men's and women's team record to 0-1 on the young season while Florida's men and women improved to a perfect 3-0. The Penn State men's swimming and diving team claimed four events in falling 131-96 to visiting Florida. Freshman Dan Velez (Germantown, Md.) got his collegiate career started on a good note in winning the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.85. In the 500 free, it was senior Eric Gordon (Bellevue, Wa.), who posted the top time after winning the event with a score of 4:33.86. The quartet of Patrick Bird (Muncie, Ind.), Eugene Botes (Thorton, Pa.), Eric Gordon and Willie Gordon (Alpharetta, Ga.) took home the title in the 400 free-relay while sophomore Marc Gastaldo (Winslow, Maine) claimed the three-meter diving crown.

On the women's side, the Gators flexed their muscle once again in winning the meet with an overall score of 141-87. Pennsylvania native Courtney Stanchock (Bloomsburg, Pa.) was crowned the winner of in the 200 breast after swimming to a time of 2:18.75. In the 500 free, junior Sally Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won her first event of the season with a time of 5:00. The women's team followed suit by taking home the crown in the 400 free-relay with an overall time of 3:08.85. Katie Hostetler (Chambersburg, Pa.), Jen Eberst (Clifton Park, N.Y.), Susan Janoski (Exeter, Pa.) and Sally Anderson combined to conquer the Gators in the relay event.

"The University of Florida has an outstanding tradition and an outstanding team. They out-classed us in every single phase of today's event," said Penn State men's and women's head coach, Bill Dorenkott.

Both the Penn State men's and women's teams will be back in action on November 8, when they host the Cavaliers of Virginia at McCoy Natatorium.
