MenĄ¯s Swimming Sits in 16th place at NCAA Championships

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ¨C After two days of competition at the NCAA Championships the #20 Penn State menĄ¯s swim team is in 16th place with 36 points. Texas, the defending champion, leads the meet with 376 points.

After earning All-American honors in the 1-meter springboard yesterday, Steve Bohner (Lansdale, Pa.) continued his strong Championships with a 14th place finish in the 3-meter springboard. His 14th place earned him honorable-mention All-America honors.

In the first final of the day, the 200-yard medley relay, the Nittany Lions came away with a 14th place finish. The team of Josh Weaver (York, Pa.), Mark Zucca (Hudson, Ohio), Eugene Botes (Glen Mills, Pa.) and Bob Molettiere (Harleysville, Pa.) swam a time of 1:29.96. Their 14th place in the finals bettered their placing of 16th in the preliminaries.

The Nittany Lions also placed 14th in the 800-yard freestyle. Martin Schierhorn (Zappendorf, Germany), Andrew Hartner (New Paltz, N.Y.), John Lutz (Hershey, Pa.) and Todd Minnier (Avon Lake, Ohio) combined to swim a season best time of 6:32.87

Other Penn State highlights included, Eugene BotesĄ¯ 17th place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 47.55 and Martin placing 20th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:37.35.

The NCAA Championships will conclude tomorrow. The prelims begin at 11:00 a.m. and the finals begin at 7:00.
