Penn State Diving Team Qualifies Two for NCAAs on First Day of Zone Meet

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (March 12, 2004) The Penn State men’s and women’s diving team accomplished goal No. 1 on Friday as sophomore Lisa Silvestri (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) and junior Marc Gastaldo (Winslow, Maine) both won their respective events at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships in Annapolis, Md.

Silvestri scored 547.45 on the one-meter board and Gastaldo had a total of 539.70 on the three-meter board to qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will be held later this month.

The Nittany Lion women held the top four spots after the preliminary round on the one-meter board. Sophomore Alison Riccobono (Ypsilanti, Mich.) finished second with 509.3, junior Corey Pagnotta (Westport, Conn.) stepped up to finish third with 508.15 and senior Maggie O’Brien (Minnetonka, Minn.) took sixth with 478.25.

Junior Adam Pierce (Conroe, Texas) finished fourth on the three-meter board with 497.95 and senior Mike Alderman (Arlington, Va.) was 11th with 469.05.

The men will compete on the one-meter board and the women will perform on the three-meter board beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday. Penn State does not compete in platform diving, which will also be held Saturday. Three more divers from both the men’s and women’s diving events will qualify for the NCAAs.
