Men’ Swimming in Third After Two Days at Big Ten Championships

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – On the second day of the Big Ten Championships the #20 Penn State men’s swimming team set two more school records, bringing their total to four. The Nittany Lions currently stand in third place with 290 points, while Minnesota leads with 487.

Penn State broke a school relay record fore the second consecutive day. The 200-yard medley relay team consisting of Josh Weaver (York, Pa.), Mark Zucca (Hudson, Ohio), Eugene Botes (Glen Mills, Pa.) and Bob Molettiere (Harleysville, Pa.) finished third in a school record and NCAA provisional time of 1:27.78. Minnesota won the event in a meet and pool record time of 1:26.23.

Botes also set a new school record en route to placing second in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 47.66. Botes was the fastest qualifier after the prelims with a school record time of 47.01, which was also a NCAA automatic time. His prelim time bettered his own school record of 47.48. Penn State had two other swimmers place in the top eight. Todd Minnier (Avon Lake, Ohio) placed 3rd in a provisional time of 47.91, while Brent Creager (Glendale, Ariz.) placed sixth in a provisional time of 48.23.

Two Nittany Lion swimmers placed in the top eight in the 200-yard freestyle. Martin Schierhorn (Zappendorf, Germany) earned his second top ten finish by placing sixth in a time of 1:37.19. Schierhorn’s time of 1:36.67 in the preliminaries was the second fastest in school history. Andrew Hartner (New Paltz, N.Y.) placed eighth in a time of 1:43.64. but swam a NCAA provisional time of 1:37.73 in the prelims.

Mark Zucca, Josh Weaver and Jaffrey Clark (Malvern, Pa.) also scored individual points for the Nittany Lions. Zucca placed 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 56.54, but his time of 55.85 in the prelims earned him a NCAA provisional mark. Weaver placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 49.00, which was also a provisional time. Clark finished 10th in the 400-yard individual medley in a provisional time of 3:54.06.
