Lion Men in Eighth Place after First Night of Big Ten Championship Competition

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.; Feb. 23, 2006 - The Penn State men's swimming and diving team is in eighth place after the completion of tonight's finals competition in Bloomington, Ind. Indiana University is hosting the 95th annual Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. Penn State dominated the diving portion of tonight's competition.

Penn State shined in the 1-meter diving final. Junior Mike Alderman (Arlington, Va.) captured 1st place with a score of 354.45. Senior Adam Pierce (Conroe, Texas) took 7th with 315.75.

Junior Daniel Kaiserian (Radnor, Pa.), sophomores Sean Swanepoel (KZN, South Africa), Sean Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and freshman Spencer Maglich (Sarasota, Fla.) began the night finishing 8th in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:21.16.

Freshman Ryan DeWeese captured an NCAA "B" qualifying time of 4:25.99 in the 500-yard Freestyle, finishing 12th in the second event of finals competition. In addition to finishing 12th in the 200 Freestyle Relay, Biedermann placed 13th in the 200-yard IM. He earned an NCAA "B" qualifying time of 1:49.52.

Kaiserian and Swanepoel continued to earn points for the team by finishing 14th and 15th in the 50-yard Freestyle with times of 20.62 and 20.87, respectively.

The last event of competition saw the Penn State 400-yard medley relay team unable to score because of a disqualification.

Preliminary competition begins at noon tomorrow in the Counsilman- Billingsley Aquatic Center. Finals competition begins at 7 p.m. Competition will continue through Saturday, Feb. 25 with the last round of competition beginning at 7 p.m.
