Men's Swimming to Participate in Big Ten Championships this Weekend
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The No. 13 Penn State men's swimming and diving team heads to Minneapolis, Minn. this week to compete in the 2001 Big Ten Championships. The meet, which will be held from Feb. 22-24 in the Minnesota Aquatic Center, will feature five ranked teams. Defending Big Ten Champion Michigan comes into the competition ranked ninth nationally. The Nittany Lions have moved up to the 13th spot in recent College Swim Coaches Association of America polls. Host Minnesota (16th), Purdue (21st), and Wisconsin (22nd) round out the nationally ranked Big Ten squads.
Head Coach Peter Brown feels good about his team's preparation for the Championships.
"Our goals heading into Big 10's are quite simple....swim fast, dive well, score as many points as possible and get as many guys as we can to NCAA's."
Penn State will be familiar with their surroundings in the Minnesota Aquatic Center. The Nittany Lions swam extremely well in the facility at the 2000 NCAA Championships when the team posted a school-best 19th place finish. The Nittany Lions are coming off their third consecutive dual meet season with only one defeat. The team recorded a 2-1 record in Big Ten dual meets defeating Purdue and Ohio State, with their lone defeat coming to Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Coach Brown hopes to perform well again in the pool regarded as one of the best facilities in the country.
"I like the makeup of this team and believe that if we take advantage of Minnesota's pool, where every lane is fast, we will be proud of the results when it's all said and done."
Preliminaries are set to begin at 11:00 a.m. with finals to follow beginning at 7:00 p.m. For up-to-date Big Ten Championship information visit the men's swimming link at www. GoPSUsports.com.
