Men's Swimming and Diving Drops Final Dual Meet of Season
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. (Feb. 5, 2005) - Senior Dustin Thompson (Munster, Ind.) had two individual wins, but the Penn State men's swimming team dropped a disappointing 128-112 dual meet against Big Ten rival, and No. 23, Ohio State in the regular season finale Saturday at McCoy Natatorium. Marc Gastaldo (Winslow, Maine), Patrik Johansson (Lund, Sweden), Daryl Northrop (Verona, N.J.), Thompson and Mark Zucca (Hudson, Ohio) all competed in their final competitions at McCoy Natatorium on Senior Day. Thompson enjoyed wins in the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500 freestyle with times of 9 minutes, 32.62 seconds and 4:33.91, respectively. Northrop won the 100 freestyle in 45.41, and junior Shawn McLin (Sinking Spring, Pa.) won the 100 backstroke in 50.90. Freshman Josh Graham (Newport News, Va.) touched the wall in second-place in the 200 freestyle in 1:41.87, just behind Ohio State's Joseph Doyle in 1:41.85. The Buckeye's Matt Voelker won another close race when he finished the 50 freestyle in 20.76, just ahead of Northrop, who took second in 20.78. Junior Chris Ippoliti (Berwyn, Pa.) took third in the 200 IM in 1:52.91. Ohio State's Nathan King (1:52.71) and Brian Tiemeier (1:52.77) took first and second, respectively. In diving, junior Adam Pierce (Conroe, Texas) placed second on the 1-meter board with 216.25. He took fifth on the 3-meter board with 189.40. Gastaldo was third on the 1-meter board (189.85), and third on the 3-meter board (206.20).
