Men's Swimming Defeats Rutgers

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The # 20 Penn State men's swim team (5-3, 1-1 Big Ten) defeated Rutgers University (5-3) by a score of 157-84. The win was the fifth straight time the Nittany Lions have beaten the Scarlet Knights.

Several senior swimmers and divers were able to capture victories on Senior Day. Diver Steve Bohner (Lansdale, Pa.) won both diving events. His total scores of 351.30 in the 1-meter springboard and 337.50 were both good enough for a NCAA zone qualifying marks. Fellow senior Bob Moletierre (Harleysville, Pa.) won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.37. His time is the fastest a Nittany Lion has swam in the event this season.

Eugene Botes (Glen Mills, Pa.) turned in the highlight of the meet by setting a new McCoy Natatorium record of 44.56 en route to winning the 100-yard freestyle. His time bettered the record of 44.74 set by Dan Judge of N.C. State in 1989. Botes' time was also a NCAA provisional mark.

Botes was also a member of two winning relay teams. He combined with Josh Weaver (York, Pa.), Mark Zucca (Hudson, Ohio) and Todd Minnier (Avon Lake, Ohio) to win the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:20.60. In the final event of the afternoon, Botes, Matt Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.), John Lutz (Hershey, Pa.) and Josh Cierski (Macungie, Pa.) combined to win the 400-yard free relay in a time of 3:01.80.

Penn State took control of the meet from the get go by winning the first eight events. In all, the Nittany Lions won 11 of the 13 contested events and finished one-two in four events.
