MenĄŻs Swimming and Diving Leads Missouri and Iowa After First Day of Two-Day Event

IOWA CITY, Iowa (Jan. 28, 2005) ¨C Nine Penn State menĄŻs swimmers had a hand in wins as the Nittany Lion swimming and diving team finished the first of a two-day double-dual meet with leads over host Iowa, 108-69, and Missouri, 94-89.

The three teams will wrap up the 21-event meet with the second, and final, session beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at the University of Iowa Fieldhouse Pool.

Junior Shawn McLin (Sinking Spring, Pa.) led Penn State with three wins on the day, including a top individual finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 51.29 seconds.

McLin helped teammates Daryl Northrop (Verona, N.J.), Patrik Johansson (Lund, Sweden) and Kyle Miranda (Louisville, Colo.) win the 200 medley relay in 1:33.38.

He also came away with a win in the 800 freestyle relay (6:51.78) with senior Dustin Thompson (Munster, Ind.), freshman Sean Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and freshman Josh Graham (Newport News, Va.).

Northrop led Johansson, Dan Kaiserian and Chris Ippoliti to a win in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:23.46.

Thompson also came away with a win in the 1,650 freestyle in 15:56.55.

Divers Adam Pierce (Conroe, Texas) and Marc Gastaldo (Winslow, Maine) had a good day on the 1- and 3-meter boards as well. Pierce finished second on the 1-meter board (302.85) and third on the 3-meter board (329.85). Gastaldo took third on the 1-meter board (282.15) and second on the 1-meter board (330.90).
