Swimming And Diving Teams Sweep Rutgers at McCoy Natatorium
-UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Jan. 22, 2005) - On Senior Day for the Penn State women's swimming and diving team, both the Nittany Lion men and women swept a meet with Rutgers at McCoy Natatorium. Paced senior Deirdre Dlugonski (Washington, Pa.) with three wins, the women won 169-71. Senior Daryl Northrop (Verona, N.J.) also had three wins for the men, who won by a score of 143-99. For the Nittany Lion women, the 200 medley relay team of Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.), Kristen Woodring (Sinking Spring, Pa.), Amberle Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Dlugonski kicked off the meet by winning with a time of 1 minute, 44.49 seconds. Dlugonski also went on to win the 50 freestyle (24.27) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:27.60) with freshman Lauren Preyss (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and seniors Larissa Kavchok (Emmaus, Pa.) and Kerry Smith (Havertown, Pa.). Preyss also finished first in the 100 freestyle (52.05). Senior Courtney Stanchock (Bloomsburg, Pa.) won the 200 breaststroke (2:19.38), sophomore Nikki Collins (Carmel, Ind.) took first in the 1000 freestyle (10:05.73), sophomore Megan Palera (Santa Maria, Calif.) won the 400 IM (4:27.52) and sophomore Margy Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished first in the 500 freestyle (4:55.67). In the diving events, seniors Corey Pagnotta (Westport, Conn.) and Alison Riccobono (Ypsilanti, Mich.) each had a first-place finish on the 1- and 3-meter boards, respectively. Pagnotta had a score of 257.93 on the 1-meter board, and then took second on the 3-meter board with 250.12. Riccobono won the 3-meter event with 269.40, while finishing second on the 1-meter board with 254.78. Northrop helped to get the men started by helping junior Shawn McLin (Sinking Spring, Pa.), freshman Kyle Miranda (Louisville, Colo.) and junior Patrik Johansson (Lund, Sweden) win the 200 medley relay in 1:32.35. Northrop also won the 50 freestyle (20.88) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:06.58) with Sean Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Dan Kaiserian (Radnor, Pa.) and Sean Swanepoel (KZN, South Africa). McLin also won the 200 backstroke (1:52.16) and Miranda won the 200 breaststroke (2:06.68). Sophomore Pat Healy (Philadelphia, Pa.) took first in the 1000 freestyle (9:42.21) and Dustin Thompson (Munster, Ind.) won the 200 butterfly (1:53.42). Senior Adam Pierce (Conroe, Texas) and senior Marc Gastaldo (Winslow, Maine) each took a first-place finish in the 1- and 3-meter diving events, respectively. Pierce won the 1-meter event with 315.68 and took second on the 3-meter board with 327.30. Gastaldo won the 3-meter event with 338.10, and took third on the 1-meter board with 260.70.
