Men's Swimming Opens Weekend Impressively
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The # 20 men's swim team began the weekend with several fast times in a very competitive atmosphere against Big Ten rivals #12 Michigan and Purdue. In all non-scored events, the Lions managed to earn numerous seasonal bests.
The highlight of tonight's action was the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Nittany Lions team of Eugene Botes (Glen Mills, Pa.), Daryl Northrop (Verona, N.J.), Bob Molettiere (Harleysville, Pa.) and Todd Minnier (Avon Lake, Ohio) led from the gun and never relinquished the lead. Their winning time of 1:21.67 was a season best by over six seconds. Botes and Minnier also finished one-two in the 100-yard butterfly. Their times of 49.20 and 49.81 were also seasonal bests. Several other Nittany Lion swimmers began the weekend with a bang. John Lutz placed second in the 100-yard backstroke and his time of 51.18 leads all Penn State swimmers in the event this year. Mark Zucca (Hudson, Ohio) also swam a season best in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.89. With tomorrow's action being scored the meet should be even more competitive and exciting. In the two previous years the dual meet has come down to the last relay to decide the outcome. The meet will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be held at the McCoy Natatorium.
