Men's Swimming to Host Meet This Weekend

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The No. 20 ranked Penn State men's swimming team will take on the 12th ranked Michigan Wolverines and the Purdue Boilermakers Friday and Saturday at the McCoy Natatorium. Action on Friday will begin at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday's events will begin at 1:00 p.m.

Michigan comes into the meet with several swimmers leading the Big Ten. Garret Mangieri has the best time in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:37.28 while Dan Ketchum leads the conference in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:46.62. Michigan's time of 6:33.19 in the 800-yard freestyle relay also leads the conference. Purdue will also bring a strong contingent of swimmers to Happy Valley. The Boilermakers are currently receiving votes in the latest CSCAA Coaches poll and have several swimmers with top ten Big Ten times.

Last year's meet came down to the wire with Michigan narrowly beating the Lions by a score of 129-114. Penn State defeated Purdue 171-72 and Michigan also beat Purdue by a score of 183-60. With each team near the top of the Big Ten and national rankings this year's meet should see some great competition.

Penn State last competed at against #14 Florida two weeks ago and lost by a close score of 126-110. The Lions won six events and Martin Schierhorn (Zappendorf, Germany) swam a NCAA provisional mark in the 200-yard freestyle. Diver Steve Bohner (Lansdale, Pa.) won the 1-meter springboard at the Georgia Diving Invitational on the same weekend as the Florida dual.
