Men's Swimming Remains in Fifth After OSU Invitational Second Day
Dec. 5, 2009 COLUMBUS, Ohio - Despite placing 11 individuals in event finals, the Penn State men's swimming team still found itself in fifth place after the second day of competition at the OSU Invitational. The highlight of the second day's action was in the final event of the evening, the 800 freestyle relay. The team of Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.), Jon Cochrane (Boalsburg, Pa.), Basil Kaaki (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia), and Ben Ryan (State College, Pa.) swam to fourth in the event, turning in a time of 6:37.75 behind Kaaki's 1:38.72 in the third leg. Alden and Kaaki both reached the A Final of their respective events, the 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. Kaaki had the best showing in the finals, touching the wall in sixth place in a time of 49.24. Alden swam to eighth in the 100 breast in a time of 56.81 after qualifying seventh in a time of 55.95 in the prelims. Cochrane had a quality outing in the 200 freestyle event as he won the B Final in a time of 1:40.33. Other B Finalists included Dan Fimbianti (Mahwah, N.J.) who finished 14th in the 100 back, Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa.) who was 12th in the 100 breast, as well as Luke Bushman (Green Bay, Wis.) and James Capparell (Bridgewater, N.J.) who were 10th and 16th, respectively in the 400 IM. The team as a whole concluded the day's competition in fifth place of six teams, scoring a total of 237 points. The final day of competition begins tomorrow with preliminaries at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning and the finals taking place at 5 p.m.
