Nov. 21, 2009
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 25 Penn State men's swimming & diving team was unable to keep up with the eighth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday, dropping the two-day dual meet by a score of 210.5-153.5. Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.) highlighted second-day action for the Nittany Lions winning the 50 freestyle. Virginia (3-1) out-manned the Nittany Lions in many events, but a bright spot for Penn State (2-2) was Alden, who captured his win in the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.68. Freshman Jamie Grennan (Milford, Pa.) made his collegiate debut this weekend, tying for third in the event with a time of 21.41. Dan Fimbianti (Mahwah, N.J.) and Basil Kaaki (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) were narrowly edged in their respective events, the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. Fimbianti swam a time of 50.74, while Kaaki touched the wall in 50.14. Fimbianti, Kaaki, Grennan and Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa.) teamed up to place second in the 200 medley relay (1:32.52). Alden, Kaaki, Ted Walker (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Jon Cochrane (Boalsburg, Pa.) swam a time of 3:03.65 in the 400 medley relay, receiving first-place points, while finishing second in the event. Freshman Luke Bushman (Green Bay, Wis.) added another second-place showing in the 400 IM, turning in a time of 4:01.91. The Nittany Lions will return to action in two weeks when the diving contingent head to Rutgers University for the Galbraith Diving Invitational Dec. 3-5. The swimming crew, on the other hand, will travel to Columbus, Ohio to take part in the OSU Invitational Dec. 4-6.
