South Florida Men's Soccer Defeats Akron, 2-1
STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Nov. 23, 2001-- South Florida defeated Akron, 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA men's soccer Tournament, held at Penn State's Jeffrey Field Friday night. The Bulls scored two second-half goals en route to the victory. With the win, South Florida improves to 15-6-0 while Akron ends their season at 10-7-1.
"We battled hard and did what we had to do to win," said South Florida head coach John Hackworth. "We didn't play as well as we had been, but these were different conditions. In the NCAA Tournament, a win is a win, and we move on."
South Florida started out the scoring in the 55th minute as junior midfielder Jeff Thwaites knocked home a penalty kick from the top of the box. Akron tied the game at 68:25 when freshman Kyle Veris put away a shot from the left side of the box. But Bulls junior Kevin Cowan quickly answered with the game-winning goal at 75:14 from the right side of the box to make the score 2-1.
Penn State will take on South Florida Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Jeffrey Field.
