Madison, Wis., Nov. 8, 2001 The thirteenth-ranked Penn State men??s soccer team defeated Northwestern 2-0 in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament being held in Madison, Wis., on the campus of the University of Wisconsin. The Lions advance to the semifinals of the eight-team tournament and will face Michigan State on Fri., Nov. 9 at 5:00 p.m. CT. With the win, Penn State improves to 13-3-1 overall, 5-1-1 in conference play.
Freshman Gabe Bernstein (Maplewood, N.J.) started off the scoring for the Lions, putting away a pass junior Brent Jacquette (Wallingford, Pa.) and senior Ricardo Villar (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the 27th minute. With the assist, the 31st of his career, Villar moves one step closer to becoming the all-time assist leader in Penn State men??s soccer history. He is currently second on the list, and one assist away from tying the all-time mark of 32.
Freshman Chad Severs (Ocean City, N.J.) rounded out the Penn State scoring, finishing on a pass from Ben Dawson (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England) at 30:00 to put the Lions up 2-0, which is how the game would end. The goal was Severs?? fifth of the year.
