Penn State Men¡¯s Soccer Falls at No. 10 Akron

Follow PSU Men's Soccer:

AKRON, Ohio (Sept. 19, 2003) ¨C The Penn State men¡¯s soccer team felt the effects of not playing with star forward Chad Severs (Ocean City, N.J.) as No. 10 Akron knocked of the 13th-ranked Nittany Lions 1-0 Friday. Hans Jorgen Haugland hit the top-left corner of the net on a free kick from 25-yards out to give the Zips a 1-0 lead. Akron (4-1-1) played keep away over the final 20 minutes to keep Penn State off the scoreboard. Severs twisted an ankle in the fourth minute of the contest and went down in pain. He continued playing, but left the game in the 19th minute and did not return. He is extremely doubtful for Penn State¡¯s match versus St. Bonaventure 3 p.m. Sunday at Jeffrey Field. Freshman Simon Omekanda (Rochester Hills, Mich.) led the Nittany Lions with six shots on goal, including one that Akron goalkeeper Justin Christafaris stopped with four minutes remaining. Nittany Lion goalkeeper Matt Novchich (Asheville, N.C.) made six saves in the game.
