Penn State Men's Soccer Freshman Named to College Soccer News National Team of Week
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Sept. 9, 2003) - Penn State freshman Simon Omekanda (Rochester Hills, Mich.) was named to the College Soccer News National Team-of-the-Week after being named the Ohio State Classic's Tournament MVP with Penn State's two wins Sept. 5-7 in Columbus, Ohio.
Omekanda scored two game-winning goals, including one with 10 seconds remaining in double overtime Sunday against Tulsa, as Penn State went on to win the Classic. He was the only Big Ten player named to the publication's National Team-of-the-Week. "Simon is settling into the college game and his stats from this past weekend demonstrate that he has the potential to be a big time player," said Penn State head coach Barry Gorman. "What the stats don't show is that he could have had three additional goals if it weren't for the woodwork." Omekanda hit the post on three addtional shots over the weekend. He totaled two goals and 10 shots, including seven against Tulsa, in the tournament. He leads the Nittany Lions with five points on the season. No. 12 Penn State is 2-2 on the season and will open its home schedule with the Penn State Nike Classic this Friday and Saturday at Jeffrey Field. The Nittany Lions will battle Boston College 7 p.m. Friday in a game that will be televised by CN8 and then they will take on No. 25 Hartwick 7 p.m. Saturday.
