Nittany Lion Men's Soccer Defeats Bucknell 5-1 in Season Home Opener
STATE COLLEGE, Pa., August 31, 2001 -- The Penn State men's soccer team (1-0, Big Ten 0-0) overcame a quiet first half to oust the Bucknell Bison 5-1 Friday night at Jeffrey Field. Senior All-America selection Ricardo Villar (Sao Paulo, Brazil/ Visconde de Porto) had two goals to lead the Lions. The rain-soaked field made for slippery conditions, but that did not stop Villar from scoring his first goal of the night 4:41 into the game, off of a corner kick from senior Greg Oldfield (Warminster, Pa./William Tennant). But from then on, neither team could get the ball into the net. Penn State took seven shots in the first half while not allowing the Bison near the goal. After the break, the Lions came out on fire. Villar scored his second goal of the evening, heading in a rebound five minutes into the half. A Chad Severs (Ocean City, N.J./ Ocean City) cross was put in by senior Ken Lear (Weston, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) less than three minutes later. Freshman Severs scored himself on an amazing shot from the left endline with 20 minutes left in the game, putting the Lions up 4-0. Senior Jorma Makipaa (Lahti, Finland/Salpausselan Lukio) scored his first-ever goal at Penn State, heading in a corner kick by Villar at 79:49, making the score 5-0. The lone Bison goal was scored as Alexander Par deflected in a cross by Nick Taylor with less than four minutes to play in the game. The Penn State defense held Bucknell to just one shot for the contest. This victory puts Nittany Lion head coach Barry Gorman one step closer to breaking the all-time win record at Penn State, which is currently held by Walter Bahr with 185. Gorman currently stands at 180. Penn State travels to Columbia, S.C. to take on the Gamecocks Sunday Sept. 2. They return to home action at Jeffrey Field Thursday, Sept. 6 as they host Villanova at 7 p.m. Scoring Summary Penn State 1 4 5 Bucknell 0 1 1 PSU 4:41 Ricardo Villar (Greg Oldfield) PSU 50:09 Ricardo Villar PSU 52:10 Ken Lear (Chad Severs) PSU 69:58 Chad Severs PSU 79:49 Jorma Makipaa (Ricardo Villar) BU 83:23 Alexander Par (Nick Taylor) Shots: PSU 19 BU 1 Fouls: PSU 14 BU 12 Corner Kicks: PSU 6 BU 3 Saves: PSU, Ryan Sickman 0 (87:01, 1 GA); Eric Earnhardt 0 (2:59, 0 GA) BU, Steve Whitaker 6 (90:00, 5 GA) Cautions: PSU 0 BU 2 (Hemmert, Y, Unsports., 30:14/ Stunzenas, Y, Unsports., 47:42) -LIONS-
