Penn State Falls to Richmond 2-1 In Double Overtime

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Richmond Spiders defeated the No. 17 Penn State Nittany Lions in the first match of the Scarlet and Gray Classic tonight in dramatic fashion, 2-1, in double overtime. Michah Fisher scored from 15-yards out in the 101st minute to secure the victory for the Spiders.

The returning Co-Big Ten Freshmen of the Year winner, Chad Severs (Ocean City, N.J.), got the scoring started for Penn State in the second period when he scored from the top of the six-yard box in the 54th minute to put the Nittany Lions on the board first. Senior Brent Jacquettte (Wallingford, Pa.) was credited with the assist on the play. The Spiders rallied to tie the game at 1-1 in the 69th minute of the contest when Chris Lahoud scored from the top of the 6-yard box on an assist from Paul Kelly.

With the score knotted at one, neither team was able to generate any scoring until the second overtime when Fisher scored from 15 yards out unassisted to lift the Spiders to a season-opening 2-1 victory. Prior to the loss, Penn State had won four straight season openers.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up its participation in the Scarlet and Gray Classic on Sunday at noon, when they take on the Pirates of East Carolina. Sunday's contest will be the first meeting between the two respective schools.
