Will Driscoll and Man-Down-Defense Earn NCAA Awards
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ¨C July 10, 2002 ¨C Senior captain Will Driscoll (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) earned the NCAA goals per game title for the 2002 season scoring 48 goals in 13 games for a 3.69 average. The Nittany Lion Man-Down-Defense earned their NCAA honor after they led the country in Division I with 64 stops on 73 of their opponent¡¯s extra-man opportunities. This season, Driscoll led the Nittany Lions in shots (121), points (55), and goals (48). He became the new Penn State career goals leader after he scored six goals against the Delaware Blue Hens and currently sits atop the list with 127 career goals. Driscoll earned the team¡¯s MVP award and was a unanimous selection as First Team All-ECAC. The Man-Down-Defense led the ECAC for eight straight weeks in the top spot with a .876 percentage. Seven times this season, the Lion Defense shutout their opponents on their man advantage opportunities. The best game the Penn State Man-Down-Defense had came against Rutgers where they kept the Scarlet Knights from scoring on all eight of their extra-man opportunities.
