Team USA 23-Man Roster for World Championships Selected (Lacrosse Magazine)
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State men's lacrosse alumni Drew Adams and Greg Gurenlian will represent U.S. Lacrosse at the 2014 FIL World Championships it was announced on Monday. Their selections have two Penn Staters on the 23-man U.S. team for a World Championships for the first time.
Adams, a 2009 graduate, has been in contention for a spot on the team for the past few years following a pair of Major League Lacrosse Goalkeeper of the Year honors in 2011 and 2012. Adams will be making his first World Championships appearance when action kicks off July 10 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.
Gurenlian was a late addition to the U.S. training camp after bowing out of competition in January due to shoulder troubles. Gurenlian has fought through a torn labrum during the MLL season, winning a league-high 140 draws in nine contests thus far. His high performance allowed him to re-enter the U.S. picture in June and earn a spot on the final roster.
Adams and Gurenlian round out a strong Penn State contingent that will travel to Commerce City, Colo. outside of Denver for the game's premier international tournament. Joining Adams and Gurenlian are current rising junior Matt Sexton (Niskayuna, N.Y.), who will represent England, while head coach Jeff Tambroni is an assistant for the U.S. side and assistant coach Chris Doctor an assistant for the Iroquois Nationals.
Opening night of the FIL World Championships is slated for Thursday, July 10 when the United States plays Canada at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The contests is a rematch of the 2010 Final where the U.S. won by a goal. In all, a record 38 nations are competing with pool play continuing July 11.
The U.S., Canada, Iroquois, England, Australia and Japan are competing in the most competitive division, Blue. Six days of pool play (July 10-15) will feed into knockout stages with the top four teams from the Blue Division advancing; the top two to the semifinals, the third and fourth teams the quarterfinals.
