UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – US Lacrosse announced its tryout candidates for the 2018 U.S. Men’s Lacrosse team on Monday evening, with Penn State alums Drew Adams (2009) and Greg Gurenlian (2006) both named as part of the 59-man group.
The pair of Nittany Lions, who both play professionally for the Major League Lacrosse’s New York Lizards, will take place in the first round of tryouts from July 9-11 at the new U.S. national team's training center at US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Maryland.
Gurenlian, a two-time MLL faceoff athlete of the year in his 11th professional season, holds the major league records for single-season faceoff wins (280), groundballs (175) and faceoff percentage (.732), all set in 2015 when he was the first ever faceoff athlete to win the MLL’s MVP. During his time at Penn State, the faceoff specialist held a career faceoff percentage of .580, good for third all-time, while scooping up 305 groundballs, good for fourth most in program history. Gurenlian’s 508 faceoff wins at Penn State rank second in program history.
Adams, a 2009 Penn State grad in his ninth season in the MLL, is a three-time all-star in the professional ranks. He entered the 2017 MLL season with over 5,540 minutes played in 95 games, logging a career save percentage of .531. During his Penn State tenure, Adams was a three-time First Team All-ECAC honoree, holding Penn State’s record for career saves with 694. His .652 career save percentage ranks fifth all-time in program history.
Gurenlian and Adams were both a part of the 2014 Team USA roster, as well as the New York Lizards’ 2015 MLL championship team.
Following the initial round of tryouts, U.S. head coach John Danowski and his staff will follow up with additional tryouts and training weekends at US Lacrosse on the weekends of Sept. 1-4 and Oct. 6-9.
